The latest study on the U.S. labour market shows that the salary level for full-time office workers is rapidly rising. According to ZipRecruiter data, the average salary for office jobs in 2024 reached $82,037, a nearly 40% increase from $59,085 in 2023. In contrast, salary growth for remote and hybrid work modes was relatively modest. The average salary for hybrid roles was $59,992, while remote roles paid $75,327.

Employees who transitioned to office work last year received a 29.2% salary increase, almost double that of those shifting to remote work. Additionally, employees moving from one remote position to another experienced a 22.1% salary increase, while those transitioning from one office role to another saw a 23.2% increase.

During the pandemic, the prevalence of remote work made many employees accustomed to working from home, but with significant salary increases, many are considering returning to the office. In fact, despite the strong demand for remote work, the number of remote positions is decreasing. According to research by LinkedIn, although remote jobs account for less than 10% of all positions in the U.S., they attract nearly half (46%) of job applications.

To entice employees back to the office, many companies have started raising salaries. A Resume Builder survey indicates that by the end of 2024, about 90% of companies plan to implement some form of return-to-office policy, with nearly 30% of companies even threatening to fire employees who do not comply with office work requirements.

Raising salaries aims not only to attract employees back to work but also to improve retention rates. In industries with fewer remote opportunities, such as transportation, manufacturing, health care, and leisure and hospitality, turnover remains high. Companies in these sectors may have tried short-term strategies like sign-on bonuses or additional paid leave to attract talent, but these are only temporary solutions. Long-term strategies, such as increasing salaries or improving health care packages, may be key to retaining top talent.

While it's still uncertain whether higher salaries will be enough to persuade people to choose office work over remote offers, some studies indicate that many are willing to accept lower pay for remote work. Balancing flexibility and compensation remains a significant challenge in the current labor market.
